Typed copies of letters written by Bushnell, a Union soldier during the Civil War in Company B of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, to his family in Waitsfield, Vt. Pre-war letters describe his home life near Omro, Wis. and his work as a logger and farmer (wheat being the main crop). Later letters describe his enlistment and training as a soldier, his regiment's movement from Camp Harvey in Kenosha to Helena, Ark., his duties, fellow soldiers' behavior, skirmishes with the enemy, casualties of war, and a near-execution of three Confederate soldiers.
